Common Signs of Refrigerant Leaks

Preventive measures can reduce the risk of refrigerant leaks. These are signs of refrigerant leaks:

  • Reduced cooling: If your AC isn’t cooling as before, an air conditioner refrigerant leak could be the problem.
  • Ice buildup: Excessive ice on the evaporator coils is a sign of low refrigerant levels.
  • Higher energy bills: Leaks lead to inefficiency that can cause your energy bills to rise.
  • Leaky drain line or dirty air filter: Dirty filters can lead to leaks. Small leaks in your air conditioning system can quickly turn into larger leaks.

If you think you may have a refrigerant leak, contact our expert team today. We are available 24/7 with our emergency HVAC repair services.

How Can I Prevent Refrigerant Leaks in My HVAC System?

Preventing refrigerant leaks in your HVAC system is essential for maintaining its efficiency. Here are some steps you can take:

Regular Maintenance

  • Schedule annual professional maintenance for your AC system. Regular inspections can identify potential issues early avoiding the need for a repair or replacement.
  • Clean the coils and check for signs of corrosion. Corrosion weakens the copper tube walls and can lead to leaks.
  • Monitor the system’s drain line and air filter. Dirty filters can cause problems that lead to leaks.

Proper Installation

  • Ensure your AC unit is installed correctly. Improper installation can result in leaks over time.
  • Pay attention to joints and connections. Over time, these can weaken and contribute to leaks, leading to higher utility bills.

Vibration Control

Secure your AC unit properly to prevent excessive vibration. Vibrations can damage components and lead to leaks.

Avoid Physical Damage

Be careful when moving the AC system. Accidental bumps or impacts can cause leaks.

How Often Should I Check My HVAC System for Leaks?

Regularly checking your HVAC system for leaks is crucial to maintain its efficiency and prevent costly issues. Here’s a general guideline:

Annual Inspection

Schedule a professional inspection at least once a year. HVAC technicians can identify potential leaks, assess system performance, and address any issues.

Self-Checks

  • Visual inspection: Regularly inspect visible components like refrigerant lines, coils, and connections. Look for signs of corrosion, oil stains, or frost.
  • Listen for hissing sounds: Unusual hissing noises near the unit may indicate a leak.
  • Monitor cooling performance: If your AC isn’t cooling effectively, it could be due to a refrigerant leak.

Is There Anything Specific To Check During the Summer Months?

During the summer months, consider the following HVAC system checks:

  • Filters: Change or clean your air filters regularly. Dirty filters reduce efficiency and strain the system.
  • Thermostat settings: Adjust your thermostat for energy savings. Higher temperatures when you’re away or at night.
  • Insulation: Ensure proper insulation around pipes and ducts to prevent heat loss.
  • Seals and weatherstripping: Check window and door seals for drafts. Replace weatherstripping if needed.

What Are Some Common Winter HVAC Problems?

Water freezing within your HVAC system can lead to costly damage. Here are some common winter HVAC problems and how to prevent them:

  • Schedule regular maintenance with an HVAC contractor to inspect your system, ensure proper insulation, and replace worn-out parts to prevent freezing.
  • To avoid waking up to a chilly home, schedule an annual furnace inspection before winter.
  • An HVAC contractor will clean the furnace, replace air filters, and calibrate the thermostat for optimal heating performance.
  • Ensure proper insulation in your home to maintain consistent temperatures.
  • HVAC contractors can assess insulation and balance your heating system’s airflow to eliminate cold spots.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors to prevent this silent danger.

They rebuilt my dryer ductwork, which was so poorly designed that ice formed in it and leaked into my kitchen ceiling. They removed some bends, braced it, and insulated it. Beautiful and intelligent work!

I recently had Ali from A.M. Botte perform preventive maintenance on all three of my HVAC units, and I couldn’t be happier with the service. From the moment he arrived, he was professional, friendly, and respectful of my home—wearing booties to keep everything clean. He was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything without being pushy about sales. His work was neat and organized, and it was clear he takes pride in what he does. This was my first service with A.M. Botte, and I was so impressed that I signed up for a service contract on the spot. I had previously been with the big orange company, but after meeting Anthony personally multiple times and seeing the level of service A.M. Botte provides, I made the switch—and I’m glad I did. I would absolutely recommend them to my friends and neighbors!

Oil to Gas ConversionAbsolutely awesome experience all around. Top to bottom nothing but professionalism. Resources and expertise of a large, well established business and the personal touch of a local mom-and-pop shop.- Chad (estimator): extremely thorough and patient with my questions and concerns about the conversion. Clearly paid attention to what we needed and made sure to address any and all issues. Have three separate estimates and explained the pros and cons of each. Made us feel very comfortable making the decision.Christine (coordinator): was very communicative and thorough helping us fill out the contract and paperwork for rebates and on bill repayment through PSE&GMarc (installation manager): again, very thorough and addresses each of our concerns along the way. Even made an extra stop out to the house just to make sure he was addressing issues with our specific setup.Eric & ??? (Installers): they both did an amazing job. They were also very open to my questions and let me explain some issues we had with old system. The made sure to take the time to explain some things to me that I needed to know, were extremely clean and respectful of our home. Eric even came back out a couple days later to double check pressure and rebleed the lines for optimal performance.I would absolutely recommend this team to anyone looking for HVAC work for their home or business.
